New PC or clean up the current one?

New PC or clean up the current one?

One of the most common questions I field from folks regarding home machines is, ” My machine is so slow…should I be looking at buying a new one?”

In some cases, the answer is yes, most definitely but 9 times out of 10, the issues lie not with the hardware but with the software and operating system.  Spyware, malware, adware are huge performance hogs.  In some cases, the spyware is coupled with some nasty trojans also running on the machine and slowing down performance even more.  So, first, download some anti-spyware/malware/adware software.

I’m a big fan of the free tools and spybot search and destroy and lavasoft’s adaware are free to use on personally owned machines.  These tools sometimes find different items so it’s a good idea to run them (but not at the same time!). Anti-malware by malware bytes is another great utility.  With all of these, you’ll want to download, install, launch and make sure you update the database before running a scan.  If you haven’t already run something like this regularly, chances are they’ll find a number of items that have jumped on board when you’ve been out surfing the web.  You can fix them via these software packages.  If it finds a large number of items, you’ll probably see an immediate increase in performance of your machine.

Running an anti-virus scan is crucial as well.  You may think you’re covered because the PC you bought 2 years ago came with a copy of Norton or McAfee installed.  But, these software packages are only as good as their virus definition files and in most cases, the software that came free with your computer has a 3 month or 6 month subscription after which you must pay for any future definition updates.  Since new definitions are released almost daily due to the high influx of viruses/trojans, etc. that come out each day, it is crucial that you are running your anti-virus program with the latest defs.  Luckily, our faculty/staff/students can download the Symantec Endpoint Protection from the ITS downloads site to use on their personal machines while affiliated with Penn State.

If your machine is in such bad shape that you cannot install an anti-virus software, there are  a number of good and free anti-virus packages that you can run from the web.  For example, Panda Security’s activescan and Kaspersky Lab’s virus scanner prove very helpful.

Sometimes booting into safe mode before you run your anti-virus or anti-malware software is the best way to go about cleaning up your machine.  I’ve never seen much improvement from all of those ‘clean up’ programs.  Studies show that they don’t boost performance either and in some cases slow a machine down more than it was in the first place.  In a worst case scenario, reinstall the os from the discs you received with your machine or from the recovery partition vendors will often hide on the machine.

Using a number of different chat clients to keep in touch with all of your colleagues, family and friends?  imo chat is a nice tool that lets you log into all the popular chat programs.  It’s available via the web as well as on android or ios devices.

Bump is a nice little tool for keeping your contact info updated.  You simply bump your iphone or ipad into another ios or android device and your selected content transfers over.  It isn’t just limited to contact information; you can bump and share photos/music/calendars, etc.

osx lion and penn state wireless

osx lion and penn state wireless

We’ve seen some issues with a fresh install of lion and connecting to wireless.  There are no options for adding or updating the 802.1x info in lion.  The current version of our cisco vpn does not work either.

To fix this problem, please go to the penn state page wireless 2.0 page and when prompted to choose the OS, choose the iOS version and it will download a mobile config file and that method works or give us a call and we’ll be happy to assist you with this process.

Again, this is only for a clean install…on the upgrades, you’ll see that psu is a migrated profile but again, no edit options.

Free mindmap/flowchart apps

Free mindmap/flowchart apps

I’m all about the free apps whenever available so here’s another nice one for anyone interested in doing some mind mapping or flowcharting.  Idea Sketch is a great tool and for free, it doesn’t hurt to try it.  The current version gets great reviews as they fixed some issues they had seen with the previous iterations.

Another one that is a paid app with a free ‘lite’ version and also received some great reviews is Popplet Lite.

capacitive stylus

capacitive stylus

using a capacitive stylus with the ipad makes life much simpler in some ways (and as an added bonus keeps your screen free of those lovely finger marks).  It makes ‘writing’ in those notes programs much easier than using your finger.  I’ve found one in particular that works quite well and is fairly inexpensive.

OSX Lion

Here’s a nice review on OSX Lion….some great updates available in it…

I’m liking the sound of AirDrop for wireless file sharing, new features with Auto Save, the facetime that you can use with any other user on an mac, or ios device, full screen apps where the menu bar is hidden will be a nice option.  Multi-touch gestures and mission control are great new additions as well.   I really like resume which will let you pick right back up where you left off when you reopen an app.  This kind of works in tandem with the Auto Save functionality.  Versions will provide you with a versioning option for documents you may be working on.

More apps

More apps

There is such constant change in the apps marketplace and new and improved makes or ‘models’ of apps are always coming out.  Some other apps I’ve found that seem to serve a good purpose:

  • Documents To Go – a paid for app that allows for editing, creating and viewing word, excel and powerpoint (office 2003, 2007 and 2010) files and lets you view PDF, iWork and other files.  There’s a free desktop app that allows for 2-way file sync and it also supports syncing with cloud storage including Google Docs, Dropbox, iDisk and sugarsync – http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/documents-to-go-premium-office/id317107309?mt=8#
  • Download Meter - a $2 app that allows you to monitor and stay within your data plan allotment.  Can be very useful for the 3g equipped iPads – http://www.hedonicsoft.com/prod/iphone/download-meter/
  • Flipboard – from itunes: “Named Apple’s iPad App of the Year and one of TIME’s top 50 innovations of 2010, Flipboard is a fast, beautiful way to flip through the news, photos, videos, and updates your friends are sharing on Facebook, Twitter, Google Reader, Flickr, and Instagram. See your social media in a magazine layout that is easy to scan and fun to read” – http://ax.itunes.apple.com/us/app/flipboard/id358801284?mt=8#
  • Notes Plus – I looked at a number of different note taking applications including Penultimate, upad, notetaker hd, etc. and really find the functionality and use of Notes Plus to be the best.  It captures synced audio and provides some great writing tools.  Read more about it – http://notesplusapp.com/
