During Spring Break of my sophomore year, I participated in a program in Oaxaca, Mexico, and I loved every minute of it. During my mission, my group and I expanded an elementary school with the help of the local community. I had an amazing time getting to know the children of the community, bettering my Spanish speaking skills, and even learning new dances from the elders of the community. It was my first time in a Spanish-speaking country and it is hard to imagine it going any better than it had.

My Program Advisor even introduced me to ProWorld’s marketing team and Mexico Country Director, Diana Rayas. Everyone on their team in Oaxaca allowed for a great experience. Besides the work, there was plenty of time to enjoy the uniqueness of Oaxaca. My group and I traveled to petrified waterfalls, natural mineral springs with amazing views of the country, relaxing fun nights out in the town, and so much more.

ProWorld is an amazing organization that offers an awesome experience for any students who get involved. My group and I stayed with different host families, worked on site with the local community to expand an elementary school, and experienced complete cultural immersion. I went to Mexico on a volunteer mission and left with knowledge on working with a socio-economic organization, and now there is an open window for even better opportunities like internships and job opportunities. With locations all over Africa, Latin America, and even Asia, and more soon to open up elsewhere in the world, the possibilities are truly limitless.

In Fall 2011, I am going to be a Junior at Smeal College of Business majoring in Marketing. As a ProWorld Ambassador, I encourage any student who is thinking of getting involved with ProWorld to contact me. My email address is mehari@psu.edu (or mtg5101@psu.edu).
