Squirrels!
Monday, November 28th, 2011
One of the quirky parts of being a Penn State student is sharing the campus with some of nature’s furry four-footed ambassadors: squirrels. The Penn State squirrels are world-famous, and one even has its own Facebook page under the name “This Squirrel” (which represents the technology help desk at the university). In the October issue of State College Magazine, an entire article was published recanting how the Penn State squirrels got here. It also addresses some of their strange mystique and habits. (The full article can be read on www.statecollege.com). Our squirrels are Eastern Grays and dine on a variety of cuisine including both substances from the earth (acorns and such) and substances from the students (M&Ms and such). It is not uncommon to have one approach you (at times becoming uncomfortably close if you are not a true nature lover)as you eat your lunch as an unsuspecting bystander on one of the campus benches. While they may seem more domesticated than “regular” squirrels, the Penn State squirrels ARE still wild animals and have the potential to bite if you try to pet them. So think of squirrel watching as more of a spectator sport. Take some time, sit back, and relax and watch their antics as they run and chase each other through the oak trees in front of Old Main, stealthily grab an abandoned French fry outside of the HUB—or even sit up, twitch their tails and observe YOU as they wonder why you are here sharing THEIR campus. We are…Penn State. And the squirrels are Penn State too!
